In The True Story of Ah Q, Lu Xun, the father of modern Chinese literature, draws the most famous figure in that literature: a penniless, boastful villager who turns every beating and humiliation into a private “spiritual victory,” and so never has to change. Comic, cruel, and unbearably true, it is a portrait of a whole people’s self-deception on the eve of revolution.
With it comes “Kong Yiji,” his tender and devastating sketch of a failed scholar laughed to his death. Written in the new vernacular in the early 1920s and given here in their earliest English translations, these stories made Lu Xun (1881–1936) the conscience of a changing nation.
