About this edition
Yakov Petrovitch Golyadkin, a small, timid titular councillor in the Petersburg bureaucracy, is already losing his grip on his place in the world when he meets a stranger on a snowy night: a man identical to himself in every particular, who bears his very name. Golyadkin junior is bolder, cleverer, more charming; step by step he insinuates himself into the office, the drawing-rooms, and the esteem that the real Golyadkin cannot hold, until the original scarcely knows which of them is which.
Written in 1846, when Dostoevsky was only twenty-four, The Double is a dizzying early study of a mind coming apart: comic, terrifying, and unmistakably the work of the future author of Crime and Punishment.
