About this edition
Raised in Southern comfort and ignorant of her own ancestry, Iola Leroy is betrayed into slavery when her mother's heritage is revealed. Freed by the advancing Union army and reunited, across the wreckage of war, with the family slavery had scattered, she refuses every chance to “pass” into an easier life, giving herself wholly instead to the education and uplift of her people.
Poet, abolitionist, and suffragist, Frances E. W. Harper wrote Iola Leroy (1892) as one of the first novels published by an African American woman, an ardent, deeply felt vision of dignity and purpose at the dawn of a new era.
The complete novel, all thirty-three titled chapters, with the author's dedication, William Still's original introduction, and Harper's closing note and poem, the dialect dialogue preserved and the embedded poems set as verse, behind an original mixed media cover illustration by JVB Atelier Designs.
