Esther Waters comes to Woodview a kitchen-maid, devout, unlettered and strong, to serve in a house given over to horses and betting. Seduced and abandoned, she finds herself alone in the world with a son to raise, and no way to raise him that respectable society will allow.
What follows is one of the great unsentimental portraits in English fiction, and an unbreakable love for a child. Frank enough to be banned by the great circulating libraries when it appeared in 1894, even as Gladstone and the critics praised it, George Moore’s masterpiece of English naturalism has long outlived the scandal to stand among the finest novels of its century.
