Torn between his cool, correct merchant father and his dark, music-loving mother, he grows into a writer who watches life instead of living it, adoring the fair, blue-eyed, ordinary people who will never quite love him back, and turning that longing into art.
First published in 1903, Tonio Kröger is Thomas Mann’s most personal story and the purest statement of the theme that runs through all his work: the artist as a stranger at the window, in love with a life he can only describe. “I stand between two worlds,” he says, “am at home in neither.”
