About this edition
In A Simple Heart (Un cœur simple), the servant Félicité gives fifty years of mute, faithful love to a family, a nephew, and a parrot, losing each in turn, and holding herself together to the very last.
With it stand The Legend of St. Julian the Hospitaller, a medieval tale of a murderer made a saint, and Hérodias, the night of John the Baptist’s death. First published in 1877 as Trois Contes, these are the three perfect stories in which the master of French prose said everything he knew about devotion, cruelty, and the suffering of the obscure.
