About this edition
What follows is one of the first novels written in English by a Japanese author: the witty, tender, wickedly observant record of a spirited girl meeting the New World head-on, its streets and suppers, its manners and vanities, laughing at it, and at herself, in equal measure. Yone Noguchi’s The American Diary of a Japanese Girl (1902), first issued under Morning Glory’s own name and illustrated by Genjiro Yeto, is a small, joyful classic of cross-cultural wonder, and a founding work of Asian American literature.
