First published in 1928, Quicksand is Nella Larsen’s incandescent first novel and one of the essential works of the Harlem Renaissance.
Helga Crane, the daughter of a Danish mother and a West Indian father, is beautiful, intelligent and restless, forever moving in search of a place where she can simply belong: from a Black college in the American South, to the glitter of Harlem, to the white society of her relatives in Copenhagen, and back again. Spare, sensuous and unsparing, Quicksand is a masterwork of longing and entrapment, and a piercing study of a woman caught between worlds.
Larsen was the first Black woman to receive a Guggenheim Fellowship for creative writing. The complete 1928 novel, all twenty-five chapters, with her original dedication and Langston Hughes epigraph preserved, freshly typeset behind an original mixed media cover illustration by JVB Atelier Designs.
