In 1898 a young Englishwoman, married to a Prussian count and marooned on his remote estate in Pomerania, fled the house for its neglected garden, and wrote there, anonymously, the book that made her famous. Elizabeth and Her German Garden is her rapturous, funny, sharp-tongued diary of a year among the roses and the larkspur and the “Man of Wrath” — a hymn to solitude, idleness, and open air that enchanted readers on both sides of the Atlantic and has never quite gone out of fashion since.
This edition gathers it with its sequel, The Solitary Summer (1899), in which Elizabeth resolves to spend one whole season alone with her books, her garden, and her own good company. Together the two make a small classic of happiness, and of a woman quietly claiming a life of her own.
Set as two clearly labelled Parts, each opening on its own section page, with the diary's dated entries carried as small-caps run-in leads, behind an original mixed media cover illustration by JVB Atelier Designs.
