About this edition
This edition gathers the four great books of the English nursery macabre into a single volume.
Heinrich Hoffmann’s Struwwelpeter (1845), the picture book of gruesome ends that terrified generations of children into eating their soup and holding their nurse’s hand, appears in the anonymous 1848 English translation that made “Shock-headed Peter” a household terror. With it stand three books of Hilaire Belloc’s pitch perfect deadpan verse: Cautionary Tales for Children (1907), The Bad Child’s Book of Beasts (1896) and More Beasts for Worse Children (1897), in which children who tell lies, slam doors and run away from their nurses meet the fates they so richly deserve.
Funny and frightful in equal measure, and as delicious now, for readers of every age, as they were a century ago. Fifty poems, each labelled by volume and freshly set on its own page, behind an original mixed media cover illustration by JVB Atelier Designs.
