Bevis and his friend Mark have the run of a Wiltshire farm and a great glittering pond, and out of them they build an entire world: an inland sea to be sailed and charted, jungles and savages, a gun to be forged, and a hidden island to be discovered and defended through one endless summer of make-believe that is somehow more real than the grown-up world around it.
First published in 1882 and drawn from Richard Jefferies's own boyhood by the water at Coate, Bevis: The Story of a Boy is the great English novel of the imagination of childhood, luminous with real fields, real weather, and real wonder, and loved ever since by the readers and writers who came after.
